A Couple of Changes on the Site

As you can probably see, the site had a small facelift. I hope that you like it. I wanted the site to load faster and more cleanly and still wanted to have some new bells and whistles and if you look around, you will see a couple of new things, including a slightly larger content area so that we can have larger videos and pics, plus some new ways to get to content in the right column. Oh and the new header (I put it on a diet). The site changes have been applied only to the main Retroist blog. I will now move through the other sections of the site and bring them inline with the new style and hopefully add some new twists to those areas as well. Here will be the order for the changes:

  1. Forum
  2. Games
  3. Television
  4. Podcasting

That is not in stone, but its how I see myself attacking it. Thanks for bearing with me while I worked on the site and perhaps made some errors that made it to the live site. I hope it was not too inconvenient.

I get emails from people asking me if they can do more on the site. First I encourage you to participate on the site and please tell your friends about it. Second if you want to be more involved and have something in mind, send me an email at retroist@retroist.com or reach out to someone else on the team (you can see their name and contact info in the right hand column). In the meantime, please keep Sharing and Tweeting and Stumbling them links and thanks for spending time with us.

Where else can you find the Retroist?
Twitter and Facebook seem to be the most active places not on this site that I hang out currently, but I am tentatively playing with Flickr.

Now if you will excuse me, I am going to take a nap and then go play baseball with a horse…

    Looks cool to me!

Really enjoy the website, and my only (trivial) complaint to this point had been that it was very slow to load. Looks like you’ve taken care of that! Keep up the good work!

  3. The Retroist

Thanks! Only been a few hours, but so far, so good.

Wow, Retroist, you’ve outdone yourself this time. I love the sleeker looking header, which captures the right blend of contemporary design and retro whimsy. I especially like the Popular Posts sidebar as it ensures I don’t miss any favorites when I haven’t had a chance to view all posts. The improved load speed is very noticeable and really allows me to focus on the awesome retro content without a hint of frustration. And while I know they aren’t new, the feature boxes beneath the header are very eye-catching. I know that the Mayor won’t be up there forever, but it makes me happy to see his greasy smiling face when I pay the Retroist a visit.

As a sometimes contributor to the Retroist I may be biased, but I think this is one of the best blogs on the internet, and the podcast just can’t be beat! Keep up the good work!

It looks fabulous … great job … and well worth it 🙂

This site is looking spiffy, Retroist!

I’m thinking you might need to leave that picture of Dirk the Daring up in the corner though, this is just my own thoughts on the matter of course, but I think he classes up the site. 😉

Wow thanks guys. Glad you like the changes. Hopefully I can bring a couple of positive things to other areas of the site.

I’m looking forward to seeing the new site! You may think that merely by typing this, I am on the site, but you’d only be half right. It no longer loads properly on my computer at work. But, that’s a problem on our end – not yours. We’re still forced to use IE 6 for reasons I’d rather not go into. The Retroist semi-loads under IE6, but since I’m only one of 4 people left on the planet who occasionally use that browser, I don’t think it requires any fixing on your part. We should upgrade our browser soon (I hope).

Vin! Arrggh. I did try to make it work on IE6, I have a copy on a laptop here. I feel your pain and cannot wait to hear what you think of the updated version when you see it.

Okay, back on the site using iPad Safari and it looks great! And on IE6 it was usable – just not perfect. We’ll be on a new browser in a couple of months.

Great job on the site, Retroist.
The look and functionality has improved and yet is just as cozy as ever.

One thing to mention: Sometimes a post will disappear into the ether after clicking ‘Post Comment’, and I think it happens just as a new post is simultaneously hitting the front page.
Or it could be gremlins. Or the typo police.

But no matter the technical hiccups and need for upgrades, this site is about voice and content from you and its contributors, and that’s why we retro lovers keep coming back.

    It’s all good, my friend.
I always look forward to dropping by and making my mind’s retro aisles light up the neons and start up the muzak, as shambling corpses stir and arise, ambling towards my hot-blooded flesh, looking for a meal and…
Wait, what was I talking about?

    Oh yeah, love it here.

    Uh…pass the shells.
