How much did a blank Video Tape cost in 1984?

The answer would vary widely depending on the quality, but they were pretty pricey, especially if you were a kid. Above is a coupon from Pay ‘n Save from 1984 that will save you a dollar on Ampex tapes. Which brings the price down to $5.99.

Ampex, as a company, has a pretty storied history riddled with technology leading moments, but I never had much luck with their video tapes. Still for $5.99, if I had the money, I would have picked one up.

In today’s dollar amount, they would cost $13.71 each.

    That’s super-cheap- for 1984.
    I would’ve bought one, definitely.
I recall $15 to $20 were the going prices for most well known brand VHS tapes. FUJI was my fave brand, mostly because of the white slip cases and the included sticker sheet with cool icons to label our tapes with. Love that.
As for sketchy quality brands, I still have a ZUMIG brand VHS cassette from the mid-80s. Wonder if the oxide is still on the tape?

  3. Ahhh, video tapes. I miss the format, but not the amount of space they take up!
