Spectravideo’s Compumate Turns Your Atari 2600 Into a Computer

We are talking suburban high tech here! Compumate came with a membrane keyboard and was equipped with a phone jack for use with a standard tape connector. Was it great? No, but I still wanted one so that I could use the their sweet sweet DRAW program. It allowed for very simple animation (9 cycling frames), but I was still convinced I could become the next Walt Disney.

Here is a little video of the Compumate in action:

I had one of these. I loved the animation program – it was pretty restrictive with 9 frames – a bit like being able to create a basic animated gif.

I always wanted one of these, but never got to see it in action. Looked pretty cool!

How come the Retroist never had one? He was ALL about the 2600. This would have made him a computer whiz kid then.
