“Weird Al” Yankovic Performs “Dare To Be Stupid”

One of my favorite “Weird Al” songs is of course the DEVO inspired “Dare To Be Stupid” which was on his third Album, 1985’s “Dare to Be Stupid”. The song is based on the music of the DEVO song “Big Mess”, which is on 1982’s “Oh, No! It’s Devo”. After the song was released Mark Mothersbaugh reputedly sent a letter to Weird Al, congratulating on recording a perfect DEVO song. It is a pretty damn good DEVO song and I would love to see them perform a parody of their own music.

Of course many will remember this as the theme song of the Junkions in The Transformers: The Movie and it appeared as the B-side on a single with “The Touch” by Stan Bush.

This performance of “Dare to Be Stupid” was taped at the Marin Center in San Rafael, CA on October 2, 1999.

Every time I hear this song, I think of Transformers: The Movie.

Me too. That was a great soundtrack.

I saw a Weird Al concert special some years ago on VH1 and that guy’s shows are insane. He basically dresses up for each song and recreates the video. I’ve never seen him live and in person, but those shows must be long as hell.

Seeing a Weird Al show as an adult is on my “must do” list.

The good thing about Weird Al is that he never goes out of date!

I saw him live in Vegas. They had a screen that played short clips from UHF while the entire band changed outfits for songs.

They don’t cartwheel around the stage because they are singing & playing for real. Most bands today can’t even play their own songs live but these guys can play many styles live.

He did the blow up I’m Fat suit live. We were impressed.

They also did Chicken Pot Pie (Live & Let Die) which was never released because McCartney is a vegetarian now.
