Retroist GI Joe Animated Series Podcast
Welcome to Episode 3 of the 14th season of the Retroist Podcast. In this episode, I discuss the well-remembered cartoon, G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero.
This is part three of a four-part series on the early-eighties incarnation of the GI Joe franchise. If you are interested in learning more about the toy line and comic series, please check out, the GI Joe toys and GI Joe Comics podcasts.
I start off by discussing my appreciation for the animated series and how it became appointment television for my group of friends. It was on the first shows where we all made sure to get together when possible to watch it so that we could discuss it as soon as the episode had ended.
Then I move on to the show itself. I touch on the various companies that put the cartoon together and the talented people behind the scenes that made this show so memorable.
My focus is on the Sunbow-made show, but I also touch on the DIC series. I believe the Sunbow version is superior, but I enjoy them both.
I was going to roll the animated film into this episode but decided it might be worthwhile to do a fourth episode covering it. So this trilogy is now a tetralogy.
With on-demand programming and wide availability, the GI Joe cartoons are more accessible now than they ever were in the past. They will give you MANY hours of entertainment, so I hope I can give you the background that gets you fired up to revisit or watch it for the first time.

Production Notes
This is the third episode of the 14th season of the podcast. It was the third episode I recorded this season and is part three of a four part series. Yes, it was originally a three part series.
I cut out just a little about our cartoon watching routines from my story.
I included all the audio clips I wanted to in those one. I love the sound, music, etc from this show.
I had more about the things I covered in the last two episodes. If you can, please listen to the other two episodes first.
I removed a whole lot about the direct-to-video motion picture. I am going to re-record and try and turn that into a new episode.
The cast on this show is huge. I tried to just name a few people, which meant leaving people off. Still, it was the right things to do.
I had some thoughts on a few episodes I like but I cut them out since they were redundant because of metagirl. Plus I wanted to keep the show at around 30 minutes.
Still not bumpers being used. I think it speeds things up and doesn’t take much away from the show.
I cut out a part where I told a story about the movie. It will come back around in the next episode.
I had a sorta “greatest hits” list that went nowhere. Boring stuff.
It was a lot of fun rewatching episode from the series from this. Still say, Cold Slither forever!
metagirl is back in her first appearance of the season. Her illiteration skills have only grown since we last heard from our list champion. I was bowled over by one of them in particular during this list.
If I mispronounced your name as a Patreon supporter, please email me and I will add a corrected version to a future episode.
All the music you hear in this episode is by the mighty Peachy.
Thanks for listening to the show and I hope you have a great weekend.
