Retroist In Search Of Podcast
Welcome to Episode 4 of the 13th season of the Retroist Podcast. In this episode, I talk about the classic television show, In Search Of. Hosted by Leonard Nimoy, this well-received show explored the mysterious and unexplained in a documentary format.
I start off the show by talking about my family’s love for this illuminating half-hour of television. I never questioned why it sat next to more normal family-friendly shows on our TV set until much later. It all started to come together when I noticed my parents’ book collection was heavy on aliens and archaeology.
I jump into the show by going back to the precursors, things like the works of Erich von Däniken and the early documentaries that by Alan Landsburg that were narrated by Rod Serling. Without von Däniken we would not have had In Search Of.
Other things I touch on are the productions of Alan Landsburg including his books, Leonard Nimoy, Chariots of the Gods, the shows’ release on DVD, and much more.
List fans rejoice! Metagirl is back with the top 5 episodes of In Search Of. What will be on the list? It’s a mystery worthy of an episode of In Search Of!
Not many people realize how influential the works of Alan Landsburg., specifically In Search Of, were on modern television. Just turn on any reality show that is delivered as entertainment and you will see the DNA of In Search Of. The History Channel and Discovery Channel’s current programming owe a lot to the work of Landsburg.

Production Notes
The fourth episode of Season 13, but the 5th I recorded.
Right around 30 minutes now. It looks like the show is officially trending longer this season. I won’t require it, but I am also not fighting it as much as I used to.
I had wanted to do this episode for a long time and made some attempts in the past. I think once I realized just how influential Alan Landburg’s work was, the show came together much easier. I can’t stress it enough.
I had a section about my earliest acquisition of In Search Of episodes on VHS. I decided to edit that out and will I will move that over as an extra for Patreon Supporters.
Here is the full soundtrack album that I mentioned along with the Crystal Skull art.
Here is the Seven Deadly Sins disco concept album by Rinder and Lewis that I mentioned.
I found essays about the art direction in this film and wanted to talk a lot more about that and went a little long on it, but edited about 4 minutes off of it. Especially removed stuff about the make-up work.
I talked a little more about the books by Landsburg that I edited out.
I removed some more about Alan Landsburg productions. It was just business facts and info that just didn’t do anything. I think I simplified it enough.
I had a section where I had done a Retroist-style mash-up with the description of In Search Of. It was meh. I didn’t use any version of it but did use an outtake of it.
Some bumpers used more consistently here. All of course by Peachy. I also used some background audio from Peachy at the start when I read the In Search Of description.
I put together 3 Bonus Tracks for Patreon Supporters of the show. They include information about acquiring In Search Of on VHS before it has an official release, a movie theater parking lot grave in New Jersey, and the poetry of Leonard Nimoy.
Thanks for listening to the show and I hope you have a great weekend.
