Welcome to Episode 17 of the 14th season of the Retroist Podcast. In this episode, I talk about the long-running TV show, Emergency!
I have wanted to do an Emergency! episode for a while. I actually tried back when I did my Adam-12 podcast. It was not great, I needed to get more into the show. Glad I revisited it.
I start the show talking about my earliest memory of seeing a real house fire. It was a real eye-opener and scared me enough to dispel all my notions of being a firefighter when I grew up.
Then I move onto the show itself. I talk about the people in front of and behind the camera, shooting locations, development of the show, creators, theme song, and much much more.
metagirl is back with a top 5 list of the best episodes of Emergency!
Emergency! isn’t streaming like it used to, so I am afraid that some younger people aren’t learning about it, and older people aren’t being reminded of it. It’s a show that is worth your time and should be checked out, so please check it out.

Production Notes
This is the 17th episode of the 14th season of the podcast. It was the seventeenth episode I recorded this season. This was the second time I recorded on the subject. My first attempt didn’t work out.
My story about seeing a fire in my neighborhood was about 60 seconds longer, but I trimmed down my description of the fire and getting to the fire.
I cut down the cast size a good deal and just ran through and didn’t mention other people. It was probably about 4 edited minutes I reduced.
I had a section about the equipment of Emergency! It was overly technical and really didn’t add to the show.
I had some other commercials and a promo for Emergency!. I removed those.
I cut down my discussion of Boot vs. Henry. I am happy with the results.
Some amount of ranting about how weird I find the Adam-12/Emergency! crossover.
The section about the shared universe was trimmed about 30 seconds.
I had a section about some of the foods they made in the firehouse. It wasn’t very meaty and was only about 90 seconds.
Emergency! seems higher budget than Adam-12 and Dragnet. I had a small discussion about the low budget feel of the other two shows and where they saved money on this show. Webb was famous for his thrift.
Do watch the Burglary D31 episode of Dragnet.
metagirl is back with a new top 5 list. Glad to have her on the last two shows of the season.
All the music you hear in this episode is by the mighty Peachy.
Here is the amazing art provided by Christopher Tupa that I used for social media promotion. He really captures Johnny and Roy’s energy.
Thanks for listening to the show and I hope you have a great weekend.
I also watched this after school, but in '70s syndication. Actually my sister said she went into the medical field based on seeing this show. Well done, good actors, realistic, and some comic relief. And one of the great theme songs!
